On the Diversity of Interdomain Routing in Africa

چکیده
With IP networking booming in Africa, promotion of BGP peering in the region emerge, and changes in the transit behavior of ISPs serving Africa are expected. However, little is known about the IP transit topology currently forming the African Internet. Enhancing the RIPE Atlas infrastructure, we evaluate the topology interconnecting ISPs based on the continent. We reveal a variety of ISP transit habits, depending on a range of factors such as the official language or the business profile of the ISP. We highlight the emergence of IXPs in Africa, evaluating its impact on end-to-end connectivity. Our results however emphasize the remaining dominance of ISPs based outside Africa, for the provision of intracontinental paths. We study the impact of this aspect on AS path length and endto-end delay. Such results illustrate that performing measurements from a broad, diversified, range of vantage points is necessary to assess interdomain routing on

How Small Groups Can Secure Interdomain Routing
Although the Internet’s routing system has serious security vulnerabilities, none of the existing proposals for a secure variant of BGP has been successfully deployed in practice. This is not surprising since deploying protocols that require the cooperation of tens of thousands of independentlyoperated networks is problematic. Instead, we argue that small groups should be the basis for securing...
متن کاملInterdomain Routing as a Social Choice
Interdomain routing is an essential component of the Internet, which deals with connecting two machines in the Internet through a set of links. Today this is done through BGP, the de facto protocol of the Internet. Previous studies focus on the stability of BGP type protocols. The current thesis focuses on interdomain routing from a social choice perspective and is divided into two main parts. ...

متن کاملResilient Interdomain Routing with Bgp – Protocols and Reliability
Interdomain routing is a key element in the global Internet routing infrastructure. A resilient interdomain routing framework is required, in order to deliver reliable and dependable data communication services. However, because the existing routing system has evolved to a large scale and legacy protocols have been widely deployed, building a resilient interdomain routing framework is challengi...
متن کاملAnalysis of Interdomain Traffic
This report presents the results from measurements of interdomain traffic traces. It discusses the implications of interdomain traffic characterization on the feasibility of interdomain traffic engineering. In the first part, we study the relationship between interdomain traffic and the routing view of the Internet. Our contributions are the following. The distribution of the traffic received b...
